"Morning Barley" Tibet, oil, 40" by 60"
This is the last town before Mt. Everest, in Tibet. Because of the high
altitude, barley is one of the few crops that does well up there. Tibet held
such conflicting feelings of beauty and tragedy that I felt this scene perfectly
encapsulated both emotions - the beauty of the land, the remoteness, the people
who are at once noble, strong, and so under threat from the outside. The
mountains that have so long protected them from the outside are no longer enough
and there is a foreboding of what the future holds in store for all native
cultures there.
