"Easter Morning at Bethabara" NC oil, 9"
by 12"
Here's a little study I did at Bethabara Park in Winston-Salem, here in North
Carolina. It was threatening rain, but I thought I'd chance it anyway. While
painting, a procession of people from the nearby church all filed by and hiked
up the hill to the old cemetery called "God's Acre" to sing the
traditional Easter morning hymns (which has been done every Easter back to the
settlements founding in 1753). The sound of the music drifted down while I
painted and as I finished up the congregation made their way back down, many of
the woman struggling a bit on the steep dirt path in their Sunday heels and one
adventuresome little boy showing off by hoping rocks across the stream rather
than taking the bridge... and falling in, of course!
Just as I put my equipment into my truck, someone up there finally turned on the
faucet and it began to pour.
